Jahangirnagar University authorities have issued an ultimatum for the students to empty the dormitories by 3:30 pm, warning of strict measures if the orders are not complied to.
“According to the syndicate’s decision, the students were ordered to leave the halls by 5 pm yesterday [Tuesday],” JU Provost Committee President Professor Bashir Ahmed said on Wednesday (Nov 6).
He added that the female residential halls were empty but students are still residing in the male dormitories.
“They have to leave the halls by 3:30 pm, otherwise administrative measures will be taken against them,” he said.
On Tuesday (Nov 5), Bangladesh Chhatra League men attacked protesters demanding the resignation of controversial Vice Chancellor Farzana Rahman.
The attack left 25 people, including eight teachers after which the authorities shut-down the university indefinitely and the students were asked to leave the dormitories by 5 pm.
The attack also led to four teachers of the university resigning from the executive board of Jahangirnagr University Teachers’ Association (JUTA).
VC Islam, against whom there are allegations of graft, termed the attack as a “mass uprising,” and thanked the BCL men for “freeing” her.
A spot visit to the dormitories on Wednesday morning showed that most of the female students have already vacated the residential halls, while some were seen leaving this morning.
However, some residential halls for male are still occupied mostly by BCL members.
