The authorities have shut-down Jahangirnagar University indefinitely following a clash between protesters and Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists.
The decision was taken at during an emergency syndicate meeting led by Vice Chancellor Farzana Islam on Tuesday (Nov 5), confirmed JU acting Registrar Rahima Kaniz.
The students have been asked to leave the dormitories by 4: 30 pm.
Earlier in the day, JU teacher Professor Tareq Reza of the university’s Bangla Department said that at least 25 demonstrators including eight teachers demanding the resignation of the vice chancellor were attacked on campus allegedly by a group of the ruling party student wing.
The attack was on the protesters was carried out in front of the residence of the vice chancellor when the protesters were staging demonstrations demanding that VC Isam, who has been accused of graft, resigns.
“First a group of teachers on the vice chancellor’s side attacked the protesters. They sent Chhatra League activists after they failed,” said JU professor Raihan Rain, also a protester.
Condemning the attack, he demanded that the vice chancellor who has been accused of graft, be removed from her post.
Responding to queries on the matter, BCL’s JU unit President Md Jewel Rana said that there are allegations of Shibir affiliations against the protesters. “We want a Shibir-free campus.”
