The voter turnout for the Dhaka north mayoral by-polls and 36 wards in the two city corporations may be around 50 percent, says the Election Commission (EC).
“The voting took place in a peaceful environment and voting has not been suspended in any centres,” its Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed told the media after polls closed on Thursday (Feb 28).
Voting to municipal elections in Patuakhali and Barguna’s Amtali was also held the same day, which Ahmed said was held peacefully.
Speaking on the low turnout, Ahmed said, “Since there were to heavyweight opponents in the Dhaka north mayoral by-polls, the voter turnout was low.”
He, however, added that voter turnout was higher in voting centres of the newly added 36 wards of the Dhaka city corporations.
