Voter apathy at DNCC by-election

The Holy Crescent International School in Banasree has three centres and women voters from Banasree and East Rampura are supposed to vote here.

However, from 8am till 10:30am on Thursday (Feb 28), not a single vote was cast here. Though the presiding officer has said that votes were cast.

Voting began on Thursday for DNCC’s mayor by-election and for 36 wards of Dhaka north and south.

Voting will run till 4pm though presence of voters is low.

One presiding officer feels that people have left the city due to a long weekend while women may show up in the afternoon.

At centre-2, there are 3144 voters though not a single vote was cast till ten thirty in the morning.

The candidates competing for the post of mayor for DNCC are: Awami League’s Md. Atiqul Islam (boat), Jatiya Party’s Mohammad Shafin Ahmed (plough), NDP’s, Md. Anisur Rahman (mango), PDP’s Shahin Khan (tiger) and independent candidate, Md. Abdur Rahim (table clock).

On the other hand, there are 125 candidates for 18 wards of Dhaka south city and 24 for six reserved wards.

Voting is undergoing at a total of 36 extended wards, including 18 wards under Dhaka North City Corporation and 18 under Dhaka South City Corporation from 8am on Thursday, which will continue till 4pm without any break.
A total of 382 mayor, councilor and reserved women councilor candidates are participating in the election. The four other aspirants for the mayor post are – Jatiya Party’s (JP) Shafin Ahmed, National People’s Party’s (NPP) Anisur Rahman Dewan, People’s Democratic Party’s (PDP) Shahin Khan and independent candidate Abdur Rahim.
Atiqul Islam is contesting with Awami League’s ‘boat’ symbol while Shafin Ahmed with ‘plough’, Anisur Rahman Dewan with ‘Mango’, Shahin Khan with ‘Tiger’ and Abdur Rahim with ‘Table Clock’. In terms of population, the DNCC is the country’s largest city corporation area with 2.35 million voters.

The mayoral post fell vacant after the death of former mayor Annisul Huq on Nov 30, 2017.
