Bangladesh is organising an international conference on migration in the southeastern district of Cox’s Bazar, where over 1 million Rohingyas are living in timid and squalid camps.
Foreign Secretary Md Shahidul Haque said that the two-day conference is scheduled to be held in May.
He made the announcement in New York, where he took part in several high-level discussions as part of the UN’s Migration Week, the foreign ministry said in a statement.
He emphasized on the importance of geopolitics in the Global Migration Regime to resolve the issue faster during a discussion titled ‘High-level Debate on International Migration and Development’ convened by the President of the UN General Assembly on Thursday (Feb 28) where he was a panellist.
A press briefing by Bangladesh’s permanent mission to the United Nations said that during his speech the secretary talked about Bangladesh’s National Migration Framework.
He informed the audience about the framework and National Migration Framework and elaborated its usefulness in solving complex issues such as mixed migration, human trafficking, and irregular migration through a comprehensive approach.
In addition to taking part in the high-level discussions, the foreign secretary met with María Fernanda Espinosa, the President of the UN General Assembly (PGA).
During the meeting, he invited the PGA to take part in the two-day conference in May.
The same day he participated in a day-long event ‘Expert Symposium on international migration and development’ organized by UN DESA and urged everyone to work actively to combat the challenges of implementing the two UN pacts on migration and refugees along with implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
