Voters are swarming into the polling centres for the city corporation polls, said Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal.
His remarks came on Thursday (Feb 28) after he cast his vote at Manik Mia Avenue’s Rajdhani High School polling centre.
“It’s not true that the voters have lost enthusiasm for the polls. All the voting centres are crowded,” he said.
Saying that the voter turnout might have been poor in the morning due to the weather, he added, “The turnout will increase once the weather improves.”
“It took me a couple of minutes to cast my vote because of the queue.”
Responding to queries about only ruling Awami League’s polling agents being present at the centres and voters not turning up because of the lack of competition, the minister pointed to People’s Democratic Party’s (PDP) mayoral candidate Shahin Khan who was also present there.
“He competed with me too and is now contesting for the mayoral polls,” he said and added that there is competition in both the mayoral and ward councillor election.
Kamal said that the law enforcers were carrying out their responsibilities as per the Election Commission’s directives.
“They did a good job with the national polls. I hope that they will do the same with the DNCC polls and the upcoming Upazila polls.”
On the election atmosphere, he said, that everything was going well and that the voting environment was “fair.”
The minister expressed hope that the voters will be able to exercise their franchise and help their chosen candidates win.
