Students have locked into clashes with police at several locations in capital Dhaka on Monday.
The incidents were reported from the city’s Shabagh, Rampura and Bashundhara residential area on Monday.
In Shabagh, a group of Dhaka University students tried to take position on the intersections around 3pm after a procession, which started from DU campus, a Dhaka University student, Mehedi Hasan told Bangla Tribune.
“Students exchanged heated arguments with the police as the lawman did not allow them to take position”, Hasan said.
“Police tried to convince the students who emerged from the DU campus. Later we used water cannon and tear shells to disperse them,” Ramna Zone Deputy Commissioner Maruf Hossain told Bangla Tribune.Chase and counter-chase were reported.
Samajtantrik Chattra Front President Salman Siddiqui said, “At least, 10 students were injured in police action two detained on the spot.”
Several witnesses, however, told Bangla Tribune that a constable sustained injuries after brick chips hit him.
Police also picked up at least four people, they claimed.
Sahbag police OC Abul Hossain confirmed the detention. He, however, could not clarify the number of the detainees.Residents of Bashundhara said, around 2:30pm, students of private North South University (NSU) began to gather in front of the Grameenphone office inside the area.
They first swooped on the lawmen forcing the police to retaliate. Chase and counter-chase reported.
Police fired rubber butter and lobbed tear shells to disperse the unruly students.
Vehicular movement inside Banshundhara remained stopped since the clash broke.
Additional forces were deployed outside the residential area to avoid further untoward situations.Speaking to Bangla Tribune, NSU spokesperson Belal Ahmed said, “Students from others institutions also joined with their NUS fellows. We are trying to convince our students but nobody listens.”
“Officials also fell trapped inside the university due to the clashes,” said Ahmed.
Earlier in the day, a group of unruly people attacked at the university located in the capital’s Rampura, said university authorities.
Public Relations Officer of the university Mohiuddin told Bangla Tribune, “Some youths started to pelt bricks and stones from outside the campus gate at 10 to 10:30 in the morning.”
They ran away when the students chased them, he said.
When the students staged demonstrations outside the campus, the police started to lob tear shell on them, he added.
“They got in the campus and staged demonstrations inside. We are not allowing anybody to get in without ID card. The police have taken position outside,” Mohiuddin said.
Ainun Nanar, a student of the university, said, “The situation was normal in the morning. Suddenly, about 10:15 stones and bricks were started to pelt and security officials immediately closed the main gate.”
I came to know several students were injured, she said.Some students, seeking anonymity said, the attackers were activists of Chatro League and Jubo League.
Later in the afternoon, police urged the students to remain calm.
Violating the police’s call the students attacked the lawmen around 5pm forcing the police to charge baton.
Police also detained three people on the spot.
