A BIWTA rescue boat at the collision spot of the estuary of Meghna and Dhaleshwari riversAuthorities suspect poor visibility due to dense fog was behind the collision between two launches in Narayanganj, which left one passenger dead on Saturday (Dec7).
Mostafizur Rahman, in-charge of the local Bandar Kalagasia River police outpost, said the Chandpur-bound launch ‘Bogdadia-13’ from Dhaka collided head-on with ‘Manik-4’, which was heading for Dhaka from Sharitpur.
Dense fog over the river is primarily suspected to be the reason of the accident, according to the police officer.
Mohammad Masum Billah, a member of BIWTA diver squad said, “The divers rushed to the scene immediately after being informed.”
“Though, no one has been claimed to be missing. Divers have searched up to 120 feet deep into the river near the spot,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) has opened an inquiry over the incident.
A four-strong panel led by Joint Director (Naval Security) Saiful Islam has been told to submit its findings by three days, said Joint Director Arif Uddin of the Dhaka River Port.
