Police intervened and brought the situation under control.A brawl between two factions of the Awami League marked the council of the party's Chattogram North unit.
Supporters of Gias Uddin, former upazila chairman of Mirsarai upazila, and Ataur Ataur Rahman, former president of Mirsarai upazila Awami League, locked into an altercation when they entered the venue, on Saturday (Dec 7), according to witnesses.
They came to blows and hurled plastic chairs at each other before the start of the council at the port city's Laldighi grounds around 10am with Engineer Mosharraf Hossain and Abdul Matin Khasru, who sits on the policymaking Presidium, on the stage.
Later, the police intervened and brought the situation under control.
Assistant Commissioner Noble Chakma of the Chattogram metro police said there was a brief tension between two groups.
“We intervened and brought the situation under control. No one was injured, and the council continued without any major disruption,” said the police official.
Neither Gias nor Ataur was available for comments over the scuffle, which, however, did not hamper the council which went ahead as scheduled.
Mosharraf and Khasru inaugurated the council around 11am. Awami League General Secretary Obaidul attended the council around 1pm.
After the first session of the council at the Laldighi grounds, the second session is being held at the International Convention Centre in the port city.
The central leadership will formally announce the new office bearers at the second session of the council.
