Representational ImagePolice in Chuadanga have arrested a Union Parishad (UP) chairman at the district’s Jibannagar Upazila on charges of inciting violence.
Local BNP leader Moyen Uddin, who serves as the chairman of Simanta union council, was arrested around 8pm on Friday, said police.
“A warrant was out for him. Besides that, he was conspiring to unleash violence amid the BNP’s founding anniversary,” said Jibannagar police OC Mahamudur Rahman.
The local BNP, however, suggested the charges against Uddin were politically motivated.
“Why an honourable UP chairman like Moyen would be involved in conspiracy to incite violence? We just wanted to mark the party’s founding anniversary peacefully,” said Jibannagar BNP unit’s President Akhtaruzzaman.
