In such a situation, safe makers are saying that once safes were needed by gold traders but now, many take them for their homes.
Only the shops at English Road sell more than one hundred safes every month. Law enforcers say that illegally earned money is being kept in lockers instead of banks.

One owner says: “I have been in this trade for the last forty years and people from all levels of society buy them: bankers, business people and individuals. I have lockers starting from Tk 16,000 to more than Tk 100,000.
“Sometimes, we sell one a day and at others, 20-22 per day,” he says.
Another safe seller says: “We can make 8-10 lockers a month.”
On Sept 24 last, RAB recovered Tk 50 million, 730 bharis of gold, 2 pistols, 1 revolver, 1 shotgun and two air guns from the lockers of Enamul Huque Enu, a vice president of Awami League’s Gendaria Thana unit.
It’s believed that Enu bought the safes and lockers from a shop in English Road.
The owner of the shop said: “We make safes and lockers as per order and it’s not our headache how they are used later on.”
