The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has seized a large amount of gold and cash in safes at the residences of two local Awami League leaders at Dhaka’s Gendaria.
On Tuesday (Sept 24), the elite police unit raided the homes of Enamul Haque Enu, a vice president of the party’s Gendaria Thana unit and Rupon Bhuiyan, the joint general secretary of the same unit.
Enamul and Rupon lived in two flats at the building at Old Dhaka’s Baniyanagar area.
Nearly Tk 11 million in cash, 8.5 kilograms of gold jewelleries and five firearms were found during the raid on the two apartments, said RAB-3 chief Shafiullah Bulbul.
“According to our intelligence inputs, cash and gold have been stored in five locations. The raid on House No 31 at Baniyanagar was conducted based on that report. Safes were found on the second and fourth floors of the building,” he said.
The Tk 10.5 million in cash and jewelleries of an estimated market value of Tk 40 million were kept in safes while the firearms were found in the flats, said the senior RAB officer.
The raid came on allegations of Enamul and Rupon’s involvement with illegal casinos.
“Awami League leader Enamul is one of the partners of Wanderers’ Club. His proceedings [from the gambling facilities] were converted into gold and stored in vaults,” RAB-3 chief Bulbul told the media.
Enamul and Rupon, however, have fled to Thailand, RAB said quoting family members.
The elite force said they have found three vaults of the five reported by its intelligence wing. A fourth one has been traced at Narinda while the fifth one is yet to be found.
