Hours after suspended Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) official Khandaker Enamul Basir dismissed allegations of taking bribes, senior police officer Mizanur Rahman said that he has maintained “all records” of the illicit transaction.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday (Jun 11) at his residence in Dhaka, he said that he would present all the records and evidences if the ACC summons him.
Basir, a director with the ACC, was suspended on Monday for leaking a probe report to Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Mizanur Rahman, who is accused of earning illegal wealth.
Earlier on Tuesday, Basir claimed that the audio clip of phone conversation between him and DIG Mizan, which was broadcasted by a news channel, was fabricated.
In response to the ACC official’s claim, DIG Mizan said that the ACC should examine the audio clip to find out whether it was actually Basir on the other side of the conversation.
Asked why he had leaked the audio conversation to the media, he said, “I have done it save myself. I have maintained all records and prepared to present them whenever asked [by the authorities].”
He said he bribed ACC investigator Basir in an effort to 'entrap' the official after being 'pressured' into making the illicit payments.
DIG Mizan claimed he was 'forced' into giving the bribe despite knowing that it was illegal.
"I didn't want to, but after relentless pressure from him, I decided to do it in order to ensnare him."
DIG Mizan in a television interview on Sunday claimed that Basir took Tk 4 million in bribes promising that he would be dropped from the allegations. Basir also divulged information during the investigation, he said.
Audio clips of mobile conversations between DIG Mizan and Khandaker Enamul Basir were aired on television.
Following the allegation, the ACC set up an inquiry committee headed by ACC Secretary Muhammad Delwar Bakht.
On May 3 last year, ACC Deputy Director Farid Ahmed Patwary interrogated Mizan about his alleged illegal wealth. Later, Basir was given charge of the investigation.
Mizan was withdrawn as additional commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police following a marital scandal in January last year and attached with the headquarters.
