The victim suffers 80 percent burns, is being treated at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital’s burns unit. The female student of a Feni madrasa, now being treated with severe burn injuries, will be flown to Singapore for advanced medical treatment upon the prime minister’s order.
The 18-year-old is now battling injuries at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) after suffering nearly 80 percent burns.
DMCH burns unit Chief Coordinator Samanta Lal Sen told the media on Monday (Apr 8) that the prime minister has asked to make arrangements to airlift her to Singapore if her condition warrants.
“We have already forwarded her medical details to Singapore and initiate the process of transferring after receiving a response,” he said.
Flanked by PM’s Special Assistant Biplab Barua who went to visit the girl, Sen told the media that hospitals in Singapore are reluctant to admit patients with such severe burns. “But still we have got in touch with them.”
PMO official Barua said that the government will bear all the expenses for the treatment. “The perpetrators will not be spared, but the priority now is the girl’s health condition,” he said.
The student, a resident of Sonagazi Municipality, went to the local Sonagazi Islamia Senior Fazil Madrasa on Saturday to sit for her Alim exams, equivalent to Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC).
Some students called her to the roof and threatened her to withdraw the case filed against the principal. They set fire to her after pouring kerosene on her when she refused, according to the victim's family.
Police and others rescued her after hearing her cry and took her to Sonagazi Upazila Health complex from where she was shifted to the Feni General Hospital before transferring to the DMCH.
On Monday, she was put on life support at the DMCH burns unit as her condition deteriorated.
Doctors had earlier said that her injuries appeared to be life-threatening.
