Feni madrasa halts academic activities, suspends principal

Sonagazi Islamia Senior Fazil Madrasa All academic activities have been halted at the Feni madrasa where a female student was allegedly set on fire after refusing to lift sexual abuse charges against the principal.
The principal of Sonagazi Islamia Senior Fazil Madrasa Sirajuddaula who is currently in prison has also been suspended.
The madrasa board of directors took the decision on Sunday (Apr 7), said Additional Deputy Commissioner PKM Enamul Karim.
“It has been decided that the madrasa will give the victim Tk 200,000 for her treatment,” he said.
He added that the board of directors have also decided to bring the madrasa compound under CCTV surveillance, make senior teacher Hossain Ahmed the acting principal and fully co-cooperate with the investigation.
On Saturday (Apr 7) an 18-year-old girl was allegedly set on fire at the madrasa where she went to take her Alim examinations.
She is currently battling with critical burn injuries at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
Meanwhile, the police have detained two people- Afsar Hossain, teacher of the English Department of the madrasa and Arifur Rahman, the victim’s classmate over the allegations.
