The fire department has formed a panel to find out the cause behind the fire at Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) market in Gulshan-1 on Saturday (Mar 30).
“Fire Service and Civil Defence Deputy Director Md Shamim will head the five-strong committee,” Fire Service and Civil Defence Director Major AKM Shakil Newaz told Bangla Tribune.
The panel has been told to file its findings by seven days, he said.
According to unverified sources, firefighters have confirmed that the flames, which erupted just before 6am, originated from the kitchen market section.
Nearly 300 shops have been completely gutted in the fire, the second in a little over two years at the market in the upscale Dhaka neighbourhood of Gulshan.
On Jan 3, 2017, a huge blaze hit the market causing a portion of it to collapse.
A pair of major fire incidents in the capital have shook the nation, the first being in Old Dhaka's Chawkbazar on the night of Feb 20 killing 70 people and the second on Thursday (Mar 28) in a commercial high-rise building in Banani claiming 25 lives.
