The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Market in Gulshan-1, where some 30 shops were gutted in a devastating fire on Saturday (Mar 30), had no safety measures or fire-fighting equipments, says Mayor Atiqul Islam.
“When this market caught fire on Jan 3, 2017, there was no fire suppression system installed, and as history repeated itself, the market still did not have that system,” Atiqul told the media while visiting the scene of the incident around 8:10am on Saturday (Mar 30).
“We wanted to build a permanent DNCC market in this spot, but legal complications delayed the process. We will make a serious effort to resolve the legal issues and build a permanent DNCC market, which would feature a modern fire suppression system and other amenities,” said Atiqul.
“The city corporation will launch its scrutiny to ensure that all markets, shops and shopping centres have fire suppression systems installed,” he added.
“We will take legal action against shop owners and their associations if evidence of negligence is found in this matter,” said the DNCC Mayor.
