Election Commission Secretary Helaluddin Ahmed deems BNP’s accusations on him as a propaganda meant to pressurize him and bring him into controversy.
BNP alleged him of conducting secrets meetings with government officials in order to sway the polls in the Awami League’s favour.
“I took part in no such meeting. This is nothing but an attempt to slander me,” he told the media on Saturday (Nov 24).
“I work for the Election Commission, an independent institution. I’m usually in office till 8 or 9 pm,” Ahmed said, adding, “I strongly condemn these accusations.”
He added that the issue will be brought up during the EC’s meeting on Sunday (Nov 25) and the Commission will take whatever decision they see fit.
Earlier in the day, senior BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi made the accusations during a media briefing.
Citing police sources, he claimed that on Nov 20, the EC secretary, Public Administration Secretary Foyez Ahmed, PM’s Secretary Sajjadul Hassan and many others top officials and members of various law enforcing agencies including DMP conducted a two-and-half-hour meeting to review the plans of rigging the polls.
Rizvi added that during the meeting it was decided that Jatiya Oikya Front will not receive any co-operation and the frequency of mass arrest will be increased in addition to creating an environment so dire that the alliance is forced to backtrack from polls.
