On Sunday (Nov 25), Election Commission (EC) will take final decision on the matter and inform all registered political parties and returning officers.
EC Secretary Helaluddin Ahmed, told Bangla Tribune, “Our decision is that a person cannot take part in election by remaining in post but after we get a high court directive on the issue, we will inform the relevant persons.”
During the ninth parliamentary election, the 1972 clause was amended and the city mayors, UP chairmen were deemed ineligible for nomination while remaining in their respective posts.
Based on this, a writ was lodged with a variety of orders. In the tenth parliamentary election, several UP chairmen resigned from their previous posts after winning the election.
At that time, a proposal was made suggesting that all such persons willing to become candidates in the parliamentary election should resign from their posts.
