Voters in six out of the 300 parliamentary constituencies will cast their franchises through electronic voting machines (EVMs) in Bangladesh's 11th Parliamentary Election slated for Dec 30, says the Election Commission.
The constituencies, based in urban areas, will be decided through random sampling, according to the decision taken by a Commission meeting on Saturday (Nov 24).
“It was unanimously decided on during the 40th Commission Meeting that EVMs will be used at all polling stations in six constituencies,” Commission’s Secretary Helaluddin Ahmed told the media.
He said constituencies in urban and city corporation areas will be chosen to introduce EVMs for the first time in the national elections.
“A committee headed by Commissioner Rafiqul Islam is working on it. The constituencies will be chosen on Nov 28 in front of the media,” said Ahmed.
Responding to query, he said that EVMs will be used at an estimated 900 polling stations.
“Teams comprised of regular election officials and members of the army will oversee the operation of EVMs. A three-day workshop for Signal Corps officers of the Bangladesh Army will start from Sunday, who will train more officers. The Signal Corp will also provide all kind of technical support at the polling stations,” said the EC secretary.
