Environment Minister Md Shahab Uddin has stressed for stopping the use of non-degradable materials, including polythene bags.
“Don’t take polythene bags for carrying items from the shops, use paper or jute bags instead. We have to reduce the use of nondegradable materials,” he said while he was addressing the freshers reception programme at Shahjalal Science and Technology University (SUST) in Sylhet on Sunday (Feb 2).
“Polythene bags pollute water, soil and air of our country. We have failed to stop the use of the material despite enforcing laws,” Shahab said before seeking cooperation from the teachers and students to end polythene usages.
The Maulvibazar-1 MP also urged for tree plantation, saying, “Aside from stopping deforestation, we have to plant trees. We planned to plant 10 million trees in the ‘Mujib Year’ across the country.”
“We can build a green and environment-friendly country with your cooperation,” he added.
