Shahinur RahmanA student of accounting of Rajshahi University, Shahinur Rahman, is in prison though he did not commit any crime. The police arrested him as an accused in the killing of Jubo League leader, Sanwar Hossain Russell, though he is not linked to the killing in any way, claims the young man’s family.
On Nov 13 last, a Jubo League worker, Sanwar Hossain, was stabbed to death over a tender related row. Sanwar’s brother Monowar lodged a case at the police station which accuses one Shahin Ahmed. As per the case documents, the accused, Shahin Ahmed, is the son of Nasir Uddin but police arrested Shahinur Rahman.
Shahinur Rahman is the son of Nur Mohammad who works at the accounting department of Rajshahi University as deputy registrar.
Nur Mohammad says: “On the day of the incident, my son went to Chapainawabganj in the morning and came back in the evening and since he had a viva exam the following day went to the local salon to get a shave from where the police took him. At 11pm the plaintiff went and told the police that Shahinur was not involved in the killing in any way and they should let him go.”
Reportedly, at this time, the OC Golam Mostafa, changed the case file and included the name of Shahinur and forcefully took Monowar’s signature.
Nur Mohammad adds: “Though the OC told me that the court will look into the matter and take a decision; my son was freed on parole to appear for the exam but could not do his internship.”
Monowar or the lawyer for the accused could not be found for comment. The acting OC of Chandrima police station, Sirajum Munir, adds: “I was not here when the case was included in the case file but can assure you that if an innocent person has been detained the truth will come out.”
The former OC Golam Mostafa could not be contacted.
