MPs want ‘Cash for Work’ programme in hill tracts

Thomson Reuters Foundation/File PhotoThe Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs has recommended to the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief to gear up the activities of ‘Cash for Work’ programme in three hill districts instead of food for work programme.
The recommendation was made at the fifth meeting of the committee held at the Khagrachari Zila Parishad Office on Saturday (Dec 14) with committee chairman Md. Dabirul Islam in the chair, reports BSS.
Committee members – Chattogram Hill Tracts Affairs Minister Bir Bahadur Ushwe Singh ,A B M Fazle Karim Chowdhury, Kujendra Lal Tripura and Basnati Chakma were also present at the meeting.
At the beginning of the meeting, one minute silence was observed to pay tributes to the Father of the Nation and his family members, four national leaders and all the martyrs who had laid down their lives in the Liberation War.
The committee recommended for installation of pre-paid meters to enhance transparency in the use of electricity and expanding power connection activities in the three hill districts.
It also called for starting school feeding programme in the hill districts to prevent school drop-outs.
Secretary of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs Ministry, Chairmen of Khagrachari and Rangamati Zila Porishods, senior officials of the Disaster Management Ministry were also present at the meeting.
