NoakhaliA court in Noakhali has framed charges against 16 people in a case filed over the gang-rape of a housewife in Subarnachar upazila of Noakhali district.
Judge Shamsuddin Khaled of Prevention of Repression against Women and Children Tribunal passed the order after a hearing on Thursday (Sept 19).
The plaintiff's lawyer Rabiul Hasan Polash said: "After investigation and collection of confessional statement from the arrestees, police submitted the charge sheet to the court, accusing 16 of them.”
“Two of them are fugitives and the rest of them are in prison," he added.
On Dec 30 night, the 40-year-old woman was forcibly dragged from her house in the Modhya Bagya village in Charjubli union of Subarnachar and gang-raped, allegedly by 10-15 local Awami League activists.
Later, her husband filed a case against nine people with Char Jabbar police station alleging that his wife was attacked because she cast her vote for a BNP candidate in the last general elections held on Dec 30, 2018.
The news of the gang rape shocked the country, sparked protests in Dhaka and elsewhere, and drew condemnation on social media.
