Railway communication between Dhaka and the northern districts have snapped following the derailment of a Khulna-bound train near Bangabandhu Bridge.

The incident was reported on Friday (Aug 9) afternoon when two wheels of a carriage of the Sundarban Express derailed near the eastern corner of the bridge.

“Railway communication between Dhaka, Rajshahi and northern districts were cut off immediately after the accident,” said Bangladesh Bridge Authority (BBA) Executive Engineer Anowar Parvez Pavel.

Bangabandhu Bridge police (west) OC Syed Shahid Alam said that Railway Authorities have been informed and a relief train was on its way to Sirajganj.

Divisional Railway Manager (Pakshi) of Bangladesh Railway Mizanur Rahman said that a relief train from Dhaka was immediately dispatched after the derailment was reported.
