A 10-km long tailback extending from Tepra in Manikganj to Baniajuri on the Dhaka-Aricha highway had formed since Friday (Aug 9) as holidaymakers began their journey home ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.
It took two hours to travel 26 kilometres from Manikganj to Paturia as the number of vehicles on the highway had increased significantly on Friday.
Ferry services at the Paturia terminal, was however, remained normal as smaller vehicles were diverted at Tepra to enter the terminal through an alternate route.
Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) has also increased the number of ferries at the terminal to 20, which was helping to ease congestion, BIWTC Aricha sector General Manager Md Ajmal Hossain.
Ferry sector Manager (marine) Mohammad Sobhan said that it took around 40 to 45 minutes to travel from Paturia to Dualatdia as the river had become calmer.
Spot visits from Maniganj to Paturia terminal found that the tendency of drivers to take over one another had led to disorder on the highway and sufferings on the road would be much reduced if reckless driving could be checked.
