Authorities are yet to trace the taxicab and its driver, fourteen days after it plunged into the Turag River at Dhaka’s Aminbazar after veering off the highway to Aricha.

The river had swelled in the past few days, obstructing rescue efforts by divers, says the Fire Service.

“We suspect the driver had been trapped inside the cab and it was unlikely that he would have managed to get out of the vehicle under water,” said its Uttara Zone chief Anwarul Haque.
Divers would continue to conduct the rescue operation at and around the site of the incident, he added.
They had mainly kept the rescue operation running to recover the driver’s body and hand it over to his family, according to Haque.
Asked about how long the rescue operation would continue if they could not achieve any results, he said that they were waiting for orders from the higher authority.
The missing driver’s brother, Jahangir, said that he was apprehensive about the recovery of his brother’s body as the fire service had failed to do that even after two weeks.
Witnesses said that the taxicab lost control when it tried to overtake a bus and fell into the river on Jul 21.
It is believed that the cab was carrying two to three passengers during the accident.
