Police charge 90 with Gaibandha Santal killings

The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has pressed charges against 90 people in a case filed over the attack on Santal community and killing of three Santal men in Gaibandha’s Gobindaganj.
Confirming the matter to Bangla Tribune, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) of PBI Mohammad Abdul Hai Sarker said he submitted the charge sheet to Gobindaganj Judicial Magistrate Hakim Partha Bhadra's court around 10am Sunday (Jul 28).
Abdul Hai Sarker, also the in-charge of PBI Gaibandha unit, said: "In the final charge sheet, we brought charges against 90 people including Sapmara Union Parishad (UP) Chairman Bulbul, UP member Shah Alam.
"So far, 25 people have been arrested in the case and one of them has given confessional statements before court," he said.


Earlier on July 17, hundreds of Santal community people of Gaibandha staged a protest and besieged the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) office in Rangpur, demanding immediate submission of the charge sheet.
On November 6, 2016, the police and sugar mill employees clashed with Santal people over the issue of cutting sugarcane on the Rangpur sugar mills land and ownership of some land.
Three Santal men were killed during the clashes and 20 people, including the police, were injured in the incident.
Following the attacks, Swapan Murmu, on behalf of the Santal community, filed a case accusing 600 unidentified people on November 16.
Later on November 26, Thomas Hemrom filed another case naming 33 people, including of Sapmara Union Parishad Chairman Bulbul, and 500/600 unidentified others.
