The Bangladesh Awami Jubo League, the youth wing of the ruling party, has expelled its member Sirhan SherifTomal, who is also the son of Land Minister Shamsur Rahman Sherif, from the organization for assaulting journalists.
Jubo League General Secretary Harunur Rashid said the decision had been made on Wednesday (Dec 13) night to ensure their political stability.
Tomal was the president of the youth wing’s Ishwardi unit.
A Pabna court rejected Tomal’s bail petition on Wednesday and sent him to jail in a case filed against him for allegedly assaulting journalists. According to the case, Tomal and his men assaulted four journalists covering an attack on a rival Awami League leader’s convoy in Ishwardi on November 29.
The journalists are Saikat Afroz Asad, correspondent of Somoy TV and the Bangladesh Pratidin; Rizvi Raisul Islam Joy, correspondent of ATN News; and Partho Hasan and Milon Hossain, DBC News correspondent and cameraman, respectively.
Earlier on May 18, Tomal and 10 others were arrested for attacking and vandalizing business establishments in Ishwardi.
