An alleged drug peddler has been killed in Thakurgaon in what the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) described as a shootout.
The incident was reported around 2am on Thursday (Jun 6) from an open field near the Bangabandhu market area at Fakirganj, said BGB.
The deceased has been identified as Monirul Islam Babul.
“Monirul Islam Babul was arrested from Fakirganj border area late on Tuesday (Jun 4) with 112 bottles of Phensedyl and a bottle of liquor. Based on Babul’s information, BGB conducted a drive in the area in the wee hours on Thursday. As soon as the BGB team reached the area, Babul’s associates opened fire on them, prompting them to fire back which triggered the shootout,” said Dinajpur-42 BGB Captain Lt Col Gazi Nahid-uz-Zaman.

“Babul was caught in the cross firing and died on the spot,” said Zaman.

“75 bottles of Phensedyl, locally-made weapons and Tk 22,000 were seized from the scene,” he said.

“Later, Pirganj police recovered the body from the scene and sent it to the Thakurgaon state-run hospital for autopsy,” added the BGB officer.
