Due to the alleged misbehaviour and mental torture of the OC of Gowainghat police station in Sylhet, Sub-Inspector (SI) Sudeep Barua, 45, committed suicide.
The incident happened on Sunday (Jun 2), said police.
The body has been taken to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for autopsy which is not done yet, said hospital’s police camp Incharge Farooq Ahmed.
Sudeep hails from Sonaichari in Rangunia and has been working in the police force for 28 years. On Feb 16, he joined the Gowainghat police station.
On Sunday (Jun 2) afternoon, Sudeep’s wife called on his mobile but could not get him; when computer operator Ajay went to look for the officer in his quarter, he found him hanging from a grille.
Soon after, the police super Moniruzzaman and other officers visited the spot and in their presence, the report of the condition of the body was prepared.
Sudeep’s daughter Shotabdi said: “My father used to call me and say that the OC misbehaved with him and he was driven to suicide by constant bullying.”
However, OC Abdul Jalil refuted the allegations, saying: “We do not have enough people here and make do with the limited number of staff; so, the question of misbehaviour does not even arise.”
Sylhet district additional police super Mahbub Alam observed, “We have not ascertained why Sudeep committed suicide; the complaints made by the officer’s family are being looked into.”
The explanation about the suicide given by his daughter is her personal opinion; if they seek legal assistance then all necessary steps will be taken.
