Due to a transport strike, buses did not leave terminal in Sunamganj on Monday (Jun 3, 2019).Bus owners in Sunamganj have gone on an indefinite strike due to the introduction of Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) bus service on the Sylhet-Sunamganj route.
The strike started at 7am on Monday (Jun 3), and this led to a great deal of suffering for Eid holidaymakers.
However, legunas (light public transport), CNGs, three-wheelers, microbuses, auto-rickshaws and other transports are in service, and carrying Eid passengers to their desired destinations.
"The sudden introduction of BRTC bus service on the Sylhet-Sunamganj route will hamper our business to great lengths. This is the reason we called for a strike," said Sunamganj Transport Workers Union Organizing Secretary Md Musbah Uddin.
According to local transport leaders and workers, there are about 400 inter-district buses operating in the Sylhet-Sunamganj route, and all of them have been affected because of BRTC's newly introduced bus service.
Moreover, Planning Minister MA Mannan is scheduled to inaugurate BRTC's premium bus service from the district's central bus terminal to ensure quality transportation for the passengers of this area.
