Police in Kishoreganj have detained the driver and his assistant of a bus on allegations of raping and murdering a woman on the moving vehicle.
Locals in the district’s Katiadi Upazila found a 23-year-old woman on the side of the road in a critical condition late on Monday (May 6) and rushed her to the state-run hospital where she was declared dead.
She worked as a nurse at the Ibn Sina Hospital in Dhaka, said her family.
She boarded a bus operated by ‘Swarnalata Paribahan’ on Monday afternoon from Dhaka for Kishoreganj’s Katiadi to join her family to spend the first day of Ramadan, said the victim's uncle Nd Nasiruddin.
“All the other passengers disembarked, except for her by the time the bus reached the Gazaria Billpar area in Bajitpur. The men on the bus raped her before dumping her on the road,” he said before adding locals took her to the state-run hospital in Katiadi Upazila town where she was declared dead.
The same night police detained the bus driver Nuruzzaman, 39 and his assistant Lalan Mia, 33.
“The suspects denied the charges. They claimed that she was wearing earphones and was run over by their bus after getting off as she could not hear anything. According to them, they took her to the hospital and fled,” Inspector Shafiqul Islam of Katiadi police said.
An investigation has been launched and preparations were on filing case, he said before adding that the body has been sent to the morgue for an autopsy.
