Two years after the grisly killing of Mahmuda Khanam Mitu, wife of former Superintendent of Police (SP) Babul Akter, the police have concluded the investigation and its charge sheet is going to be submitted soon keeping Babul Akter as the complainant of the murder case.
Meanwhile, whereabouts of the key suspect Kamrul Islam Musa alias Musa Sikdar still remains unknown.
On June 5, 2016, Mitu was brutally stabbed and shot dead by a group of professional killers in front of her school-going son near her house in Chittagong city’s GEC area.
Later, Babul Akter lodged a case accusing unidentified persons with Panchlaish police station in the city.
The Investigation Officer (IO) of the sensational murder case and also CMP’s Additional Deputy Commissioner (Detective Branch) Mohammed Kamruzzaman hinted that the charge sheet is going to submitted within a very short time keeping Babul Akter as the plaintiff and a key witness of the murder case.
The officials of the CMP also hinted that the charge sheet is expected to be accused at least six persons and keeping Musa as the prime accused.
Talking to the Bangla Tribune, Kamruzzaman said, “We have investigated the case taking all issues into account. The role of Babul Akter in the case is a complainant.”
On the other hand, Mitu’s father Mosharraf Hossain said that he would not accept it if Babul is dropped from the charge sheet.
“There is no scope to drop Babul Akter from the charge sheet. Babul lost his job and he could not rejoin as he is an accused,” said Mitu’s father.
“It is usual that the investigation officer remains in constant contact with the victim’s family. At first, the IO remained in contact with us but he did not continue it,” alleged the victim’s father.
“The bodyguard and her son witnessed that Mitu tried to commit suicide on several occasions. This amply proves that Babul Akter committed or plotted the crime,” claimed Babul’s father-in-law.
“Now it’s time to see how much accurate the charge sheet is. If Babul Akter is found to be involved with the murder case in some way or other and at the same time he is a witness of the case, then he will not testify against him,” said Chittagong Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Fakhruddin Chowdhury.
Of the accused in the murder case, Nurul Islam Rashed and Nur Nabi were killed in “gunfights” with police in July 2016 in Chittagong, while the whereabouts of Musa and another accused Kalu are still unknown.
Declaring a bounty of Tk 5 lakh to know the whereabouts of the duo, the CMP issued a red alert against Musa and Kalu on June 29, 2016.
Although police claimed that Musa went into hiding, his wife Panna Akhter claimed that plainclothes police detained him and his brother Saku in Bandar area on June 22, 2016.
Later on, Saku was shown arrested in the case. But the police repeatedly denied the claims of Musa’s wife.
On December 27, 2016, Babul Akter, in face of interrogation by the investigators, reportedly confessed that Kamrul Islam Musa alias Musa Sikdar acted as his informant.
Soon after the grisly murder, investigators have said militants might have settled a score against Babul as Babul conducted several successful anti-terrorism drives. Later on, the investigators changed their stand saying that’s all the killers are professionals and Musa had hired the killers and plotted the murder.
In a dramatic move on June 25 last year, Babul Akter was picked up from his father-in-law house in the capital and being quizzed in the police custody in connection with the murder case. During the quizzing, rumor was in the air that Babul was arrested for his alleged connection with Mitu murder but later the police official was freed after 15-hours.
Amid intense speculation, Babul was relieved of his duty on September 6, 2016. Though Babul’s father-in-laws Mosharraf Hossain took stand in favor of him but later he changed his stand asking the investigators to probe the extramarital affair option and reveal the identity of the mastermind.
However, Babul Akter brushed aside the allegation of his father-in-laws in a facebook post.
