A five-months-pregnant housewife has been allegedly killed by her husband and in-laws for dowry at Cumilla’s Nangalkot upazila.
Police recovered the body of 23-year-old Momena Akhter Tumpa from the bathroom of her in-laws’ house at the upazila’s Bakshaganj union on Friday (Apr 19).
The deceased’s brothers Nizam Uddin and Mohin Uddin said that she got married to Dulal seven months ago.
According to them her husband and in-laws started torturing her for dowry since she went to live with them on Apr 4.
They said that they called Tumpa on Thursday (Apr 20) and found it switched off and her husband didn’t pick up even after they called repeatedly.
They learned of their sister’s death on Friday through a cousin.
Meanwhile, locals said that in addition to torturing her for dowry, Tumpa’s husband was also having an affair.
Her husband, mother-in-law Shamla Begum, sisters-in-law Ferdous and Bhulu Begum, Bhulu’s husband Liton, Ferdous’s husband Bacchu Mia, brother-in-law Hamid and his wife Poly who all were allegedly involved in abusing her have been in hiding since Tumpa’s death.
Nangalcoat police Sub-Inspector Farid Ahmed said that legal action will be taken after they receive the autopsy report.
