Members of Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) have arrested Nur Uddin, one of the suspects in the murder of Nusrat Jahan Rafi who was set on fire for refusing to withdraw sexual assault charges against her madrasa principal.
A PBI team led by Additional Superintendent of police Abu Bakar arrested the suspect from the district’s Bhaluka around 11am on Friday (Apr 12), said police.
“Police arrested, Nur Uddin, one of the prime suspect in Nusrat’s murder case, after receiving a tip-off,” said Bakar.
He added that the suspect has been sent to Feni.
Eighteen year old Nusrat Jahan lost her battle for life on Wednesday (Apr 10) at Dhaka Medical College Hospital five days after the arson attack on her.
Ten people, including the madrasa principal Siraj-ud-Daula, have so far been arrested in connection with the attack.
Meanwhile, a Feni court on Apr 10 granted the police seven days to grill Siraj in custody. The other two accused are Afser Uddin, lecturer of English department of the madrasa, and student Arif.
The victim, a resident of Sonagazi Municipality, went to the local Sonagazi Islamia Senior Fazil Madrasa on Saturday (Apr 6) to sit for her Alim exams, equivalent to Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC).
Some burqa-clad assailants called her to the roof and threatened her to withdraw the case filed against the principal. They set her on fire after pouring kerosene on her when she refused, according to the victim's family.
Police and others rescued her after hearing her cry and took her to Sonagazi Upazila Health complex from where she was shifted to the Feni General Hospital before being transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
