Members of Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) have arrested a Sonagazi Municipality councillor in connection with the the murder of Nusrat Jahan Rafi.
The local ruling party leader, Maksud Alam, is also a member of the governing body of Sonagazi Senior Fazil Madrasa, where Nusrat studied.
“A joint raid conducted by the Dhaka and Feni units of PBI arrested the accused from Dhaka late on Thursday (Apr 11), and we received the arrestee at 10am on Friday (Apr 12),” Additional Superintendent of Police of Feni PBI Maniruzzaman told Bangla Tribune.
Eighteen year old Nusrat Jahan lost her battle for life on Wednesday (Apr 10) at Dhaka Medical College Hospital five days after the arson attack on her.
Ten people, including the madrasa principal Siraj-ud-Daula, have so far been arrested in connection with the attack.
Meanwhile, a Feni court on Apr 10 granted the police seven days to grill Siraj in custody. The other two accused are Afser Uddin, lecturer of English department of the madrasa, and student Arif.
The victim, a resident of Sonagazi Municipality, went to the local Sonagazi Islamia Senior Fazil Madrasa on Saturday (Apr 6) to sit for her Alim exams, equivalent to Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC).
Some burqa-clad assailants called her to the roof and threatened her to withdraw the case filed against the principal. They set her on fire after pouring kerosene on her when she refused, according to the victim's family.
Police and others rescued her after hearing her cry and took her to Sonagazi Upazila Health complex from where she was shifted to the Feni General Hospital before being transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
