All classes and academic activities of Barishal University have been suspended for an indefinite period and students have been ordered to vacate residential halls by 5pm on Thursday (Mar 28).
The university authority gave this notification via email late on Wednesday (Mar 27).
Despite the stoppage of academic activities, students began a movement from 10am on Thrusday. The university notice said the suspension was due to some unfortunate incidents that took place during the observance of Independence Day.
Reportedly, the VC had used indecorous language and the students wanted him to apologise and retract what he had said.
Students also demand stoppage of classes at TSC, reduction of seminar room rent from Tk 3,000 to Tk 500 and an inclusive observance of national events.
Meanwhile, the VC, Dr. SM Imamul, has warned of stern measures if the students do not follow university instructions.
“This is not a movement by general students and is being instigated by a certain malicious quarter,” said the VC.
Hopefully, everyone will leave the halls by 5pm today; if anyone tries to create anarchy, we will take firm steps, he added.
The crisis was triggered when general students were not invited to the Independence Day tea party and cultural evening. When students agitated, the VC reportedly called them children of collaborators.
