Two schoolgirls were killed in separate road accidents in Cumilla’s Sadar Dakkhin and Chandina upazilas.
The incidents were reported early on Tuesday (Mar 26), said police.
The victims have been identified as Mahmuda Akhter Yeasmin and Reena Saha.
Both of them were on their way to their schools to attend programmes marking the 49th Independence Day.
Yeasmin, a ninth-grader of Kutumbapur High School, died on the spot when a tractor hit her on the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway at Kutumbapur in Chandina upazila around 9.30am, Chandina police OC Abul Foysal told Bangla Tribune.
Soon after the incident, agitated students barricaded the highway. Later, police brought the situation under control, said the OC.
A class ten student of Bijoypur High School, Reena Saha, was killed after a human hauler plunged into a roadside ditch at Mostofapur in Sadar Dokkhin upazila around 9:30am, said Sadar Dokkhin police OC Mizanur Rahman.
Five others were injured in the accident and have been taken to Cumilla Medical College Hospital, added Rahman.
