Local AL leaders complain about Roumari OCKurigran Awami League leaders have sent a letter to the home minister alleging that top police officer of Roumari police station is engaged in drug business.
Local lawmaker Md Ruhul Amin, upazila chairman, six union parishad chairmen and other local Awami League leaders on May 15 sent a letter to Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal alleging that OC Jahangir Alam has formed a small group to operate drug business in the area and he also patronised other drug dealers in the upazila.
The lawmaker Md Ruhul Amin said, “Local people fear Jahangir Alam as he is harassing them in the name of anti-drug operations and we cannot tolerate this.”
The lawmaker admitted that Jahangir Alam recovered huge amount of drugs but, he did not keep proper record with the government register book so that he could sell the illegal items later.
Upazila chairman Mojibur Rahman said, “OC Jahangir Alam is himself a drug trader. He patronises local drug dealers and we lodged a written complaint with the authorities. Truth will reveal if there is an impartial investigation.”
Upazila Awami League General Secretary Md Rezaul Islam Minu said, “I got complaint from many people against OC Jahangir.”
OC Jahangir AlamRoumari Upazila Awamil League Religion Affairs Secretary Md Suruzzaman Sarkar said, “Jahangir Alam with the help of his class friend Ibrahim Lincoln conducts the drug business. Lincoln is the ring leader and he uses cars confiscated by police to send drugs to Sanandabari of Jamalpur.”
Local resident Md Syful Islam Haider alleged that he was compelled to pay Jahangir Alam several times as the police officer threatened him of harassment.
On Saturday, he said over the phone, “I filed a written complaint to IGP [Mohammad Javed Patwary] against the OC this month. He threatened me if I don’t pay him, he would file cases against me.”
The police spokesperson and AIG Soheli Ferdous said, “I heard about such allegation. I cannot say what is the status of that allegation right not.”
She said, “We give due importance to all written complaints and if found guilty after investigation, punitive actions are taken against the wrong-doers.”
When contacted Ibrahim Lincoln said, “I am not a drug dealer, rather I helped police to nab them.”
Lincoln said he and Jahangir neither studied together nor was he engaged in BNP politics.
OC Jahangir said, “I don’t care what others say. Let’s investigate.”
He said that in December district police super handed him an award as recognition to curb crimes including drug business.
Jahangir said, “Several investigations unearth that son of lawmaker [Md Ruhum Amin] is engaged in drug business. The upazila chairman [Mojibur Rahman] is also involved. They are trying to save by talking nonsense.”
