Police have detained four people including the prime accused and lover of the victim in connection with the 2018 rape-murder case.
A woman had been gang-raped and murdered by her lover and his accomplices in August of 2018, said a Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) report.
The victim hailed from Rajapur village in Bahubal Upazila of Habiganj district.
PBI Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Kutubur Rahman Chowdhury made the disclosure at a press briefing in the bureau office in Habiganj Saturday morning.
He said: “The victim was lured out from home by her lover Zubaer Ahmed on the night of August 4, 2018. Later Zubaer and his accomplices gang-raped her, and then killed her as she tried to resist the act.”
“On the following day, police recovered her body from a paddy field near her house. On August 6, the victim’s mother filed a murder case with Bahubal police station accusing unidentified people.”
The ASP added: “The case was transferred to PBI on December 4 last year where PBI Police Inspector Mainul Islam conducted the investigation. Upon lengthy probe, police traced and detained Saifur Rahman from Snanghat area of Bahubal Upazila on March 6 this year. Based on Saiful’s confession, police later detained the mastermind Zubaer and other two accused - Mamun-ur-Rashid and Abu Sayeed- from separate places.”
He furthered: “The prime accused Zubaer was detained Friday night. During interrogation, he said his friends gave him Tk500 for them to rape the victim. The resistance to the violent act led to them to slash her throat. The perpetrators then dumped the body on a nearby paddy field and fled the area.”
According to details given by Zubaer, police also recovered the murder weapon from Rajapur village Friday night, he said.
Zubaer has been sent to jail through court on Saturday noon, the ASP added.
