A mobile court has sent eleven Awami League men, including a municipality mayor, plotting to foil the balloting to Rajshahi’s Durgapur Upazila as well as for violating the polls code.
Police said the ruling party activists include Durgapur municipality mayor Tofazzal Hossain, who also serves as the party’s Upazila unit chief.
The men were detained from the Durgapur Municipality offices on Saturday (Mar 9), said Rajshahi’s Superintendent of Police Md Shahidullah.
“They were planning to unleash violence on election day in favour of an independent candidate. Following the arrests, they were taken to the mobile court, which jailed them,” he said.
The ten others are Jhaluka Union Council Chairman Mojahar Ali and his supporters Ajahar Ali, Moniruzzaman Majnu, Nur Hossain, Solaiman Ali, Shariffuzzaman Sharif, Abul Kalam Azad, Moniruzzaman Moni, Rabiul Islam Rabin and Sakil Hossain.
