One of the victim’s families has sued KSRM Group top official over the deaths in Chattogram during a charity giveaway, said police.
As many as ten women died on Monday in Satkania Upazila in heatstroke during a stampede when the business group was distributing food items as part of its charity ahead of the month of Ramadan.
Satkania Police OC Rafiqul Hossain told Bangla Tribune one Mohammad Islam started a case on Tuesday against the group’s Managing Director Md Shahjahan and several other unidentified people.
“He is the husband of Hasina Akter, who died during the charity giveaway,” he told Bangla Tribune.
The case accuses the KSRM boss of mismanagement and negligence, which caused the deaths, added the police officer.
The giveaway was organised at the grounds of a local mosque in Satkania’s Nalua Union, which happens to be KSRM official Shahjahan’s hometown. Police and local residents said, the deaths were caused by heatstroke with several thousands gathering for the giveaway.
KSRM Group said in a statement on Monday that it had informed the local administration ahead of the giveaway and that nearly 100 police personnel were deployed along with its own 200-strong security force.
It claimed of an ambulance and three doctors kept stand by at the venue.
Describing the incident as unfortunate, it said they will compensate the families of the dead victims and bear medical expenses of those injured. It also assured to provide job to the families, who lost a member.
