The BNP’s candidate in Pabna-4 seat Habibur Rahman Habib has been hacked with sharp weapons while campaigning.
His campaign came under attack at the Alhaj High School grounds in Ishwardi Upazila around 12pm on Wednesday (Dec 26).
Witnesses said that unidentified men, who came on motorcycles, attacked BNP aspirant Habib and his supporters as they were preparing for electioneering.
Armed with sharp weapons, the men hacked the Habib and his men as well as vandalised vehicles used for campaigning.
Ishwardi police OC Bahauddin Faruqi said that seven people have been held for their suspected involvement soon after the attack, but did not provide their identities.
Habib was rushed to state-run hospital in Ishwardi Upazila town with severe injuries before being transferred to the Paban General Hospital. Several of his supporters have been also hospitalised for injuries sustained in the attack.
The local BNP has claimed that the ruling Awami League supporters were behind the attack.
“Activists of Juba League (youth front) and Chhatra League (student affiliate) are involved in the attack,” said Pabna district unit Joint General Secretary Siddikur Rahman Siddik told Bangla Tribune.
The Awami League dismissed the allegation. “The attack is an outcome of the BNP’s internal feud,” said its Ishwardi Upazila unit General Secretary Mokhlesur Rahman Mintu.
Describing it as an “untoward incident”, Ishwardi Assistant Returning Officer Ahmed Hossain Bhuiyan said that the police have been reported. “We have taken all initiatives to ensure a peaceful polls atmosphere.”
