BNP candidate in Narayanganj-3 constituency Azharul Islam Mannan’s polls campaign came under attack, alleged the party leaders.

At least 15 were injured in the attack that took place in the Sonargaon upazila on Monday (Dec 24) afternoon, they said.

According to local BNP leaders, “Azharul Islam Mannan’s campaign was attacked by Grand Alliance candidate Liakat Hossain Khoka’s supporters when they reached Majherchar Eidgah area. The attackers charged with sticks and rods leaving 15 BNP activists injured.”

“The injured were taken to Sonargaon Upazila Health Complex and three among them are in critical condition,” they added.

The local Awami League leaders, however, refuted the allegation and claimed to be attacked themselves.

“A vehicle of an Awami League leader was attacked when the BNP activists were campaigning. Later our party activists rescued him from the scene,” Awami League’s Sonargao unit Acting General Secretary Mahfuzur Rahman Kalam said.

Sonargaon police Inspector Selim Mia said, “We have heard the incident. Assistant Returning Officer Md Shahinur Islam has visited the scene.”

“We will take measures after a speedy probe,” he added.
