Police in Jashore have seized nine Zebras, which it suspect were brought there to be smuggled out of the country from the bordering district.
The Detective Branch found the zebras from a cattle shed in Sharsha Upazila late on Tuesday.
The full-grown animals were found in a shed in Bagachra around 11pm on Tuesday, said Detective Branch OC Ziaur Rahman.
A total of 10 zebras were found tied to the poles. Locals came to know of them after a zebra died in the shed.
The Detective Branch raided the shed after receiving reports. Nobody was found on the scene and no-one claimed the animals.
Police said the estimated market value of the zebras will be around Tk 10 million.
“We believe the zebras were brought in for smuggling to India. Some large cartons were found there. It is believed that the zebras were covered in those boxes when they were brought in,” said OC Rahman.
He added that the animals will be handed over to the forest department.
