Jatiya Oikya Front leader Dr Kamal Hossain has vowed “to fight” for ensuring a free, fair and credible national election as he hits the campaign trail on Wednesday (Dec 12), when he travelled to the northeastern city of Sylhet.
“The people will not have the ownership of the country if a free election is not held. And there’s no freedom if the people do not own the country. A credible election aims for freedom,” he said after visiting the shrine of Shahjalal in the city.
“Our supporters are being arrested every day, which is clearly not a sign for a credible election. We will see until the end of it and fight to ensure fair polls,” said the Gano Forum president.
Urging supporters to cast their franchises early on Election Day, he said, “Vote early on Dec 30 and guard the polling stations. Do not allow anyone to rig the elections. We will fight till the end.”
Flanked by Oikya Front leaders, including senior BNP leaders Nazrul Islam Khan and Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, and Krishak Sramik Janata League chief Kader Siddiqui, Dr Kamal offered prayers at the shrine soon after his arrival around 4pm.
Following the programme at the shrine, the Oikya Front leadership campaigned for the Syleht-1 BNP candidate Khandaker Muktadir in the metropolis.
Dr Kamal is expected to fly for Dhaka around 8pm.
BNP’s Sylhet district unit chief Ali Ahmed said an Oikya Front delegation will campaign for its Sylhet-3 candidate in South Surma while another team led by JSD chief ASM Adbur Rab will campaign at Jointapur for the Sylhet-4 candidate.
