An alleged drug peddler has been killed in Cox’s Bazar in what the police described as shootout.
The incident was reported around 5am of Saturday (Dec 1) from the district’s Teknaf Upazila, said police.
The victim is identified as 35-year-old Habib Ullah Habib, who police claimed a listed yaba trader.
“Police arrested Habib Ullah and conducted a raid at Shaplapur Puranpara area in the upazila’s Bahar Chara to detain his cohorts. Sensing the presence of the law enforcing men, a group of drug peddlers opened fire and police retaliate which triggered the shootout,” said Teknaf police OC Pradeep Kumar Das.
“Later, Habib’s bullet-ridden body was found at the scene while the other yaba peddlers managed to flee. Habib was rushed to Teknaf Hospital where the doctor pronounced him dead,” Pradeep Kumar added.
The body will be sent to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital for autopsy, he added.
Police said that they had seized 6,000 pieces of yaba, two local firearms and 14 cartridges from the scene.
Sub Inspector Razu and Constable Zia and Constable Badsha were also injured in the shootout, police claimed.
