Khairul Kabir Khokon. FILE PHOTOA court in Narsingdi has sent BNP leader Khairul Kabir Khokon to jail in a case filed under the Special Power Act.
Khokon is the BNP’s pick to contest the 11th Parliamentary Election, due on Dec 30, from the Narsingdi-1 (Sadar Uapazila) constituency.
Judge of Narsingdi’s District and Session Court Md Atabullah handed the order on Thursday (Nov 29) rejecting a bail prayer after Khokon and two others gave themselves in the court.
Khokon’s lawyer Abdul Baset told Bangla Tribune, “On Feb 8, police filed the case naming 27 people. It, however, did not name Knokon, who is BNP’s joint secretary general and Narsingdi district BNP unit president.
“But, police pressed charges against 273 people including Knokon in the case on Nov 25.
“On Thursday, three people including Khokon surrendered before the court and sought bail prayer, which the court denied and sent them to jail,” Baset said.
The lawyer, however, termed the move politically motivated.
“He was named nowhere in the case statement... The court denied the bail so he can’t contest the polls,” said Baset.
