Jamaat leader Alauddin Al Azad is accused in 20 cases of violence, say police in Sirajganj's Ullapara.A local leader of the ruling Awami League in Sirajganj has allegedly snatched a Jamaat-e-Islami leader from police custody.
Police in the district’s Ullapara Upazila said that Alauddin Al Azad, the acting general secretary of the Upazila Jamaat unit, was taken from the police around 2:30pm on Monday.
OC Dewan Koushik Ahmed said that the Jamaat leader was accused in 20 cases of violence.
“A group of Awami League and Jamaat activists led by Kaira ward Awami League General Secretary Saiful Islam Khoka stopped the police team as they were taking Azad to the police station. They snatched him from police while he was still in handcuffs,” said the police officer.
No one involved has been arrested yet, said OC Ahmed adding they were working to detain Azad and the others involved.
AL leader Khoka, however, denied of his involvement.
“As many as 5,000 people were invited for the Qulkhwani (funeral rites) for my father. People from all political parties attended it. I have no idea who were the people snatched Azad from police. I do not know their political affiliations,” he said.
